About the role

Our client, a Defence and Security supplier is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join them on a contract basis at their site in Maidenhead.

Due to the nature of the role, applicants must hold the sole British nationality and current SC Clearance

6-month initial contract

Rate is open to negotiation, inside IR35

Fully onsite in Maidenhead due to the nature of the role

Job Description:

Design, develop, test, and document mechanical assemblies through the full product lifecycle.

Deliver robust mechanical solutions using company engineering tools and processes.

Create and review mechanical documentation: design packs, analysis reports, plans, and procedures.

Define and analyse mechanical performance and functional behaviours.

Optimise designs for various manufacturing methods (machining, moulding, extrusion, sheet metal, casting).

Perform tolerance analysis for precision parts and complex assemblies.

Produce designs compliant with MIL‑STD, DEF‑STAN, EMC, TEMPEST, and environmental requirements.

Generate high‑quality BS8888 technical drawings.

Select suitable engineering materials, finishes, and standard components.

Participate in and contribute to peer design reviews.

Check and verify drawings for clarity, key features, and tolerances.

Develop mechanical test solutions and supporting verification procedures.

Present mechanical solutions and effort estimates to stakeholders.

Follow configuration control and security procedures.

Collaborate with production and supply chain teams for manufacturing readiness.

Interface with electronic hardware and PCB teams to integrate mechanical and electronic designs.

Support project managers in delivering products on schedule and within budget.

Essential Skills, Qualification and Experience:

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.

A thorough understanding of key mechanical engineering principles e.g. material selection, stress analysis, vibration analysis, thermodynamics, heat transfer, assembly techniques and manufacturing processes.

Extensive hands-on experience of designing complex and rugged electronic enclosures for the defence industry.

In-depth knowledge of military and material standards applicable to environmental requirements and testing.

Extensive use Creo CAD modelling and drafting, version 8 or later.

Extensive in the advanced use of Windchill PLM system, including workflow change management and managing BOMs
